Buprenorphine is a synthetic opioid partial agonist that is used in the treatment of opioid addiction. In the video below, Dr. Randy Brown of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine explains what buprenorphine is and how it works:

Since buprenorphine is a partial opioid agonist, it has the potential to encourage misuse. To decrease risk of misuse, naloxone, a medication used to counter overdose, is added to buprenorphine. This combination drug is often called Suboxone (SAMHSA, 2016).

Buprenorphine/Suboxone can be dispensed by a physician who has received additional training to offer buprenorphine treatment. For more information on buprenorphine treatment and to find treatment practitioners in Memphis, visit SAMHSA’s Buprenorphine Treatment Practitioner Locator.
