The opioid overdose epidemic in the United States presents an unprecedented public health crisis that is fundamentally difficult to solve. A “pathways approach” recognizes that the epidemic derives from separate, dueling sources: legal and illegal. Each pathway offers opportunities to innovate and intervene where opioids intersect with the law. No matter the source, both pathways converge on the community and the individual, costing the ultimate price for too many: life. The legal pathway will explore issues related to pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug distribution, healthcare providers, and patients. The illegal pathway will explore legal issues related to drug imports, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system. By examining each event of opioid exposure along each pathway, and leveraging the law to address them, we may yet prevent further escalation of the opioid epidemic. The University of Memphis Law Review invites you to its annual Symposium and hopes you will join us in welcoming legal scholars, legislators, and interdisciplinary practitioners!
